Identity & Purpose Counseling for Men

Start Here When Life Doesn't Look Like You Expected

Career stress. A health scare. A divorce you didn't see coming. A birthday that has you asking if this is really it. These moments don't wait for a convenient time, and they rarely come with a clear next step.

Identity and purpose counseling at Ronin Counseling gives you a straight-talk space to sort out what's actually going on and build a plan to move forward, not just talk in circles about it.

This isn't about dwelling on what went wrong. It's about figuring out who you are on the other side of it, and getting there with a clear head.

You don't need to have it figured out before you walk in. You need someone who will call it straight, help you separate what you can control from what you can't, and give you real tools to rebuild.

Who Is This Therapy Service For?

This service may be for you if:

  • You're facing job loss, a career change, or constant pressure at work and don't know what's next.

  • A health diagnosis or physical change has you questioning who you are.

  • You're going through a divorce or separation and need a clear head, not just sympathy.

  • You're grieving a loss and want to get through it, not just "get over it."

  • You've hit a milestone birthday, an empty nest, or another major life shift and feel unmoored.

  • You know something needs to change, but you can't name what it is yet.

Signs This Might Be the Right Time

  • A steady sense that something's off, even when nothing is technically wrong.

  • Restlessness, or a pull to blow up parts of your life that used to work.

  • Trouble picturing what comes next after a divorce, job change, or health scare.

  • Grief that isn't just sadness. It's also anger, guilt, or numbness.

  • Pulling away from people while you try to sort it out on your own.

What Identity & Purpose

Counseling Looks Like

We start with a free 15-minute consultation to see if this is a fit. From there, early sessions focus on getting a clear picture of what's actually going on: what changed, what you're carrying, and where you want to land.

This is goal-oriented work, not open-ended talk therapy. You'll leave sessions with something concrete to work on, not just more to think about. If deeper work makes sense later, like EMDR for a loss or a hard transition, we'll get there at your pace.

Sessions happen in person in Fargo, ND, or by telehealth across North Dakota and Minnesota, whichever fits your schedule. A faith-informed lens is available if you want it woven in. Fees, session length, and frequency for this service will be confirmed together during your free consultation.

What We Work On

  • Career stress, job loss, or a career change that's shaking your confidence

  • Health changes or a new diagnosis that has you rethinking who you are

  • Divorce or separation, and rebuilding a sense of direction afterward

  • Grief and loss, including the kind that doesn't get talked about

  • Midlife questions: purpose, direction, and what actually matters to you now

  • Major life transitions that don't fit into a neat category

What Changes

There's no set timeline, and change looks different for every man who walks through this. Most men come out of this work steadier, thinking more clearly about what's next, and no longer carrying the transition alone. That's the direction we work toward together.

Meet Your Therapist

I'm Paul Polanski, a Marine veteran and licensed clinical social worker with about 10 years in practice. Before this work, I spent years in software project management, leading teams through pressure, deadlines, and constant change. That background shapes how I approach the career and performance side of identity and purpose work: practical, direct, no wasted motion.

I've also navigated my own depression and PTSD, so this isn't theoretical for me. You'll get straight talk and real tools, not a lecture. If you're also working through anger, anxiety, or burnout alongside a life transition, Men's Counseling may be worth a look too.
